Tethered Moon - First Meeting (1991)

Masabumi Kikuchi is a Japanese pianist and keyboard player. He began playing the piano at the age of six. From 1968-69 he studied at the Berklee College of Music.

In 1970 he moved to the USA, and in 1978 became a member of the Gil Evans Monday Night Orchestra where he played electronic keyboard instruments. Together with Paul Motian and Gary Peacock he belonged to Tethered Moon from 1991 and recorded several albums with this group (among others Chansons d'Édith Piaf and Play Kurt Weill).

In 1993 he recorded Triple Helix with Terumasa Hino, in 1995 Acoustic Boogie with the Terumasa Hino & Masabumi Kikuchi Quintet. In 1996 he accompanied singer Helen Merrill, in 1997 he recorded 2000 + One with Paul Motian.
Today, Masabumi Kikuchi lives a reclusive life in Japan and very rarely performs.

The 1990s were a creative and prolific period for Kikuchi. Although his decade began with the recording and release of Dreammachine, an electronic funk album produced by Bill Laswell and featuring P-Funkateers Bernie Worrell and Bootsy Collins, 1990 was also the year Kikuchi formed the critically acclaimed trio Tethered Moon with bassist Gary Peacock and drummer Paul Motian. The trio's public debut was an engagement at New York's Visiones club in November of 1991, one week after a session at Power Station Studios which yielded Tethered Moon.

This is contemporary jazz on the highest level ...
