He starts off like being chased by the Devil himself. Mississippi downhome blues at its best, performed by an artist so obscure that even producer Jeff Konkel only met him once - the day this album was recorded. His plea in the sleevenotes: 'If you do happen to see him, ask him to call me.' Excerpts from his notes: 'The session dragged on all night. It was grueling. Incredible performances were abandoned in mid-takes. Others devolved into chaos. Give the already hostile environment in the club, I considered pulling the plug at several points.' Indeed, sometimes it ain't easy recording an album. This session lasted all night long until 7.30 am the next morning. What you may purchase now is some of the most incredible Mississippi style downhome blues I have heard in a long while. Smooth like a bootleg whiskey. Incredible. Highly recommended.
Ok, I may not be totally objective here since I was there the insane night that this record was made... However, that said, this is the kind of CD that the blues world needs right now. It's a blast that makes old blues new again. If you like the first Broke & Hungry disc on Jimmy "Duck" Holmes... if you like Fat Possum's mid-90s blues catalog... if you like your blues after midnight in a Mississippi juke joint, then this CD is for you. It's R.L. Burnside meets the original Fieldstones, and it's going on my short list of this year's best REAL blues records. Congrats to Jeff and Odell on a killer debut. (by Roger Stolle)
