Formed in Glasgow, Scotland, Bobby Patrick’s Big Six were one of the few R&B-based acts active in Scotland during the pre- Beatles era, alongside the Alex Harvey Soul Band and Ricky Barnes All-Stars. In 1961 saxophonist Patrick took his group to London, England, in search of a wider audience, but within months the Big Six had moved to Hamburg, Germany, where they remained until 1965. Here they worked in their own right, and as a backing group to solo singers, notably Tony Sheridan. Patrick made numerous recordings during this period, some of which were compiled on Twistime Im Der Star Club, Hamburg. Two singles, ‘Shake It Easy Baby’ and ‘Monkey Time’, plus an EP Teenbeat Volume 3 were issued in the UK by Decca Records in 1964. Each displayed a an unerring grasp of R&B and soul styles. In 1965 the group, dubbed simply the Big Six, made their final recording with a version of Mel Tormé’s ‘Comin’ Home Baby’. Patrick then returned to Scotland where he joined his brother Bill in the Blues Council. Both subsequently worked with Alex Harvey, before becoming part of the house band at the Locarno Ballroom with Maggie Bell and Leslie Harvey. When the ballroom closed in 1967, the four musicians toured Germany for a year. Bobby Patrick then became a session musician. Of the ex-members of the Big Six, bass player Archie Leggatt joined French singer Johnny Hallyday’s backing band, before finding fame in partnership with Kevin Ayers. (by Rovi)
