The Newport Jazz Festival might have started in 1954 and held in Newport, Rhode Island before moving to New York City in 1972 and then becoming a two-site festival in 1981. Meanwhile across the Atlantic, this fest was “brought” to Belgrade and the Newport Jazz Festival in Belgrade started in 1970, where, according to Europe Jazz Network, “this festival hosted almost everyone who’s important in jazz history.”
In 1971, George Wein, who started the Newport Jazz Festival, organised a series of concerts featuring the last surviving great names in bebop for a world tour that took in New Zealand, Australia, Japan, Israel and Europe.
Each member is a master of his craft and everyone must be wondering how these individual leaders can keep their egos in check and play with each other over a two-month period. No problem - even the ailing T Monk shows great spirit - as there is a lot of give and take; from the joyous Blue ‘n Boogie to a smoky Round Midnight - one only gets the feeling of a group playing in unison and in perfect harmony.
Once again, thanks to joerg, who taped and shared the show when The Newport Jazz Festival In Belgrade was re-broadcast.
Recorded live at the Union Hall, Belgrade, Serbia (the former Yugoslavia)
